Jack Russell terrier smooth hair
Jack Russell terriers come in three types of hair - rough, brooken and smooth hair
Each of these coats is a short-haired one, as a different set of genes determines coat length. A long-haired terrier would be the Yorkshire Terrier – this is a more complicated subject, but I’m referring to the typical appearance of a Yorkie; surely everyone knows what a Yorkshire Terrier looks like?
Getting back to the point, Jack Russells with a broken coat and a rough appearance are quite similar to one another, and at first glance it is impossible to tell them apart.
Difference between smooth and rough hair
- Wire-haired and rough-coated Jack Russells do not shed indoors provided they are trimmed regularly. Their coat only sheds when it has grown out, whereas smooth-coated Jack Russells shed all year round – this is the main difference.
- Smooth-coated Jack Russells do not require trimming, whereas wire-haired and rough-coated ones need trimming every 8–16 weeks.
- Wire-haired Jacks are more resistant to dirt; everything stays on their paws, from which mud can be easily brushed off. Smooth-haired Jacks usually need a wash after a walk in the woods.
- Smooth-haired Jacks very often appear to have longer muzzles than wire-haired ones, but this is simply a matter of the lack of hair on the muzzle.

In our opinion, as well as the difference in appearance, there is also a huge difference in temperament. Smooth-coated Jackies are much more confident, bold and fearless, whilst wire-haired Jackies are much more balanced and thoughtful. In my view, this is mainly because smooth-coated Jackies come from completely different lines to wire-haired Jackies.
Ultimately, the choice is always up to the new family and their preferences – every Jack is wonderful, whatever his coat!
