Maintenance and health
Jack Russell Terriers are generally healthy dogs. Occasionally, they may suffer from allergies. Potential hereditary diseases such as primary lens luxation (PLL), late-onset ataxia (LOA), and juvenile brain disease (JBD) can be ruled out by genetic testing, which responsible breeders perform. Regular health checks of the heart and eyes every two years are recommended. Thanks to their active lifestyle, including regular running and swimming, Jack Russells have excellent immunity, and illness is rare. Regular vaccinations against infectious diseases are also important. For grooming, regular brushing is important to remove dead hair and stimulate the skin, even for smooth-coated dogs. Rough-coated dogs require hand stripping to remove dead hair and maintain coat texture. Grooming tools such as soft brushes for smooth coats or stripping knives for rough coats are used.
